Work time without the shopping part: approximately an hour (less if unlike me you don’t have to file the holes larger … <cough>).
Total cost: Just shy of €43
Fun for beloved birdies: unmeasurable

Currently, I have four macaws stranded in my bedroom. Three of them are handicapped and the fourth one, Sam, is the mate to one the females.
In particular Sam loves bathing. In my bird hall I have huge bathing bowls set-up. Since the hall has floor drains it is easy to service them. I simply lift-up and tip the bowls over, before scrubbing and filling them with fresh water. Here is a video of some of my birds bathing in one of those bowls.

In the bedroom I have no floor drains (quel surprise :-)) and to make things worse the floors are wood.
But I still want to give the birds there a chance to bathe.

What to do?

So I had the idea of taking one of the huge bowls and outfitting it with some sort of draining system which would make it possible to drain the water into a pail positioned underneath the bowl. For this, of course, the bowl would need to be somehow elevated. Voilá – a bathing table.
First I visited the local hardware store, gardening center and IKEA (cheap table) for hours to see what ingredients they might provide that I could use. I found a large planter dish that can be used as a bathing bowl on sale (€13.99) in the gardening center. In the hardware story I bought a sink drain set (€3.89). Then I went to IKEA and found a cheap table (€25) that had a melamine table top. Thus, it would be easy to clean, somewhat water resistant but still workable for me to saw a big hole out of. Here is a step by step guide of how exactly I built my bathing table:

1. Saw hole into bowl

In my collection of assorted hardware stuff I found this hole sawing attachment for my power drill. Unfortunately it was still a bit too small for what I needed. So after making the initial hole, I had to enlarge it with a big file, until the drain set fit.

2. Smooth back of planter dish

When I tried fitting the drain set I noticed it did not seal properly, because of thick ridges the planter had on its backside. So I needed to get rid of those, too.

8. Testing

I had the brilliant idea to test the leak proofedness of my set-up on the tile floor before dragging it upstairs into the bird – ummm – bedroom. Drat it leaks. Not much but a very slow drip. After thorough analysis – I crawled under the table to see where exactly the water comes from – I found that it is not the drain that isn’t sealing, but rather the plug.
I replaced the plug with another one I had and it improved the drip massively. It is still not completely gone though. I guess in a sink it does not matter to have some slow dripping, as it goes down the drain. Well until I find a plug that is really tight, I will simply have to use the table with a pail underneath to catch any drips. I just hope that my rambunctious birdies don’t get on the floor and knock the bucket over …

Therefore, it is of the utmost importance to ban any items containing zinc, such as cages, aviaries, cups, toys, etc. from your parrots’ surroundings. This is easier said than done, as it is really difficult for a laymen to distinguish zinc from other materials.

With some practice you may tell the difference between stainless steel, nickle, chrome and zinc plated materials visually. As colour differences are possible, you are still safest, though, to test it.

Laboratory

Of course, you may send metal parts to a laboratory for testing. The lab will determine the exact amount of zink. But the part will be completely destroyed – even if it was not zinc – and also these tests are awfully expensive. Thus, it isn’t really feasible to test all your parrot supplies.

Testing with a magnet

The magnet test only helps to determine whether the metal you are testing is a high quality stainless steel alloy. These kinds of steel do not react to a magnet. As lower stainless steel grades, as well as any nickel or chrome plated steels will be drawn to a a magnet, this test has only limited usefulness.

Testing with hydrochloric acid

A qualitative test for zinc may be performed with hydrochloric acid. The intensity of the reaction is determined by the concentration of the acid. For the photos I used so called technical hydrochloric acid which is available in concentrations between 33 – 35%.

Safety

Hydrochloric acid is a corrosive substance which smells strongly. You need to vent your work area well. The easiest would be to do the test on your balcony or patio or at the least in front of an open window. Do not do it anywhere near your birds! The fumes are like strong vinegar. Not something you really want to inhale.
Also you need to wear protective clothing that can easily be removed, such as an old large shirt or – if you have – a lab coat. If you spill any acid, remove the protective clothing quickly, before it can soak through, and you’ll be fine.
You should wear rubber gloves and goggles to protect your eyes should you splash. Also keep a bowl of fresh water on hand, to rinse away splashes and to place your tested articles in to wash away the acid residue.
<ach>Attention!</ach> The hydrochloric acid test should not be done by children!

The test

Place the metal parts you want to test on a clean porcelain plate which will not be affected by the hydrochloric acid. Then you put a drop of the acid on the metal – an eyedropper works very well for this and I actually keep a little glas eyedropper bottle with hydrochloric acid on hand for quick testing.
<ach>Important!</ach> Metal parts are often covered with a thin transparent lacquer layer to reduce wear and tear. You must remove this before testing so that the acid will actually be able to contact the metal. Otherwise you will get a false negative for the test, as the acid will not able to react with the protected metal. Thus, remember to scrape off the lacquer layer with a small knife prior to testing.

Test results

Zinc: strong, foaming reaction with the hydrochloric acid. The metal turns black.

Stainless steel: no reaction. The liquid may take on a slight greenish tinge.

Nickel: Very weak or no reaction. The liquid may take on a slight greenish tinge.

Chrom: Very weak or no reaction. The liquid may take on a slight greenish tinge.

To get some experience with the test, go to a DIY store and purchase little bits of chain with the different metal types, as I did for these photos. You will see the clear differences in the test reaction when you compare them.
If your metal showed to be zinc free in the test, you may return it to your parrots after thorough rinsing to remove all acid residues.
We do carry zinc free toys and supplies in our store. And for those of you who speak German, more information on zinc poisoning and treatment may be found in my first aid book: „Die Vogelschule.
