As parrot owners, we are constantly looking for healthy, but yummy foods that we can share with our feathered roommates. I have a great bread recipe that my parrots and I love and would like to share it with you.
This parrot bread is super healthy for you and your birds. It contains loads of alpha-linoleic acid (1) against atherosclerosis and Pre-Vitamin A (2) which parrots require a large amount of in their diets. But the best thing is, you won’t even be thinking about how healthy it is when you taste it! 🙂
- 500 g (2 cups) whole grain flour ( I like spelt for this it really sticks the dough well together so you can add maximum ingredients)
- 2 tea spoons baking soda
- 2 – 3 hands full walnuts (1)
- 2-3 hands full flaxseed (1)
- 2 shredded large carrots (2)
- 3 – 5 table spoons red palm oil (2)
- Oatmilk or similar liquid as required
Pre-heat oven to 220°C (430°F).
If your red palm oil has solidified, place the container in hot water. You need it liquid for mixing into the batter.
Thoroughly mix the flour and the baking soda.
For the walnuts, the flaxseed and the carrots the exact amount is not that important. You just need to make sure that there is enough flower in the mix to make your dough stick together. Of course you can also change ingredients according to your wishes. For example, you could use sesame seeds instead of the flax seeds or broccoli instead of the carrots, if you want to add a calcium rich foods to your bread and like these flavours.
Next, you mix in the dry ingredients, walnuts and the flaxseed. Then, add the carrots and mix again.
Add the red palm oil and while mixing slowly add oat milk in small amounts, until you get a smooth dough that will stick together instead of crumbling. I mix the dough with a large spoon, as I don’t like to get my hands all sticky. If you like to, you may knead the dough, but it is certainly not necessary.
Form a large ball. Cut a long line across its top. Then put your dough ball onto a baking sheet (I actually place it on aluminum foil) and bake it in the oven for a good 30 minutes. The exact baking time depends on your oven. You may need to try around with this a bit. For example, I can tell that my bread is done when I can smell it at my desk. 🙂
If you have taken it our too early and realize when you cut it open that it is still tacky inside no big problem. Just stick it back into the oven for another ten minutes or so.
Let it cool off a bit and enjoy. 🙂 I love mine with organic peanut butter and jelly
Here are some photos of Max, my official food tester, on this one. All I wanted was to take a cute bread with parrot shot, but Max dived head first right into it. In the end I rescued the bread into the fridge and gave Max a chunk. Amazingly, he rather ate that than his bowl of pine nuts which are his favourite food in the world. 🙂
